Web Designer vs Web Consultant: Who You Need To Hire and Why?

If you are reading this article, you might be looking to hire someone to design your website, it can be confusing trying to decide who you need to hire?

And 99% of the time, you get in touch with two types of people, either – Website Designer or a Web Consultant.

Well, now you might be thinking what’s the difference between the two?

Let me explain this to you by sharing a little story so you can relate.

A tale of two business owners

Two competing business owners, Adam and Joey, are looking to reach their target audience and grow their business with a new website. They both have a clear picture of the results they want from the new website.

Adam finds a web designer on Upwork at $20/hour. After Adam explained what he needs, the web designer just started working on his website straight away and in the next two months, he created for Adam a good-looking website with a sleek design and all the necessary features.

Adam paid $1200 and got a new website for his business.

On the other hand, Joey asked their friends for a referral and got recommended to a web consultant. After listening to Joey’s concept, the consultant comes back with his own ideas and suggestions that would greatly benefit Joey and his business in attracting more high-quality leads and sales. Joey paid $9000 to the consultant for the new website.

What was the result – the ROI?

Two months after the website launch, Adam has not talked to his web designer and his new website only ended up generating $3,500 in sales. And when he tries to contact the designer, he is told that they are too busy on new projects and can’t help maintain his website anymore.

In the same two months, Joey’s website is generating $10,000 in sales – monthly! And he has been able to hire additional staff members and grow his business.

Adam and Joey both turned their ideas into reality. Adam also feels like he got a good deal! But in the end, Joey’s decision to work with a web consultant was the best one.

You see, when it comes to getting a return on investment on your website project, a web consultant is worth the investment.

A web designer designs a website

I’m not bashing web designers in any way. We need them. In fact, they are an integral part of the website design process. Web designers may build beautiful websites that are pleasing to the eye, but when it comes to executing an online strategy, they are not an expert in that area and therefore that is where the role of a website consultant comes in.

But website designers are good at one thing, and that’s designing a website that looks good.

A web consultant prescribes a solution

A website consultant is someone who asks you a lot of questions, diagnoses the existing online status of your business, and prescribes the right solution for the website that will benefit your business the most.

Making recommendations on what photos to use, what content to write, and how to create a conversion-optimized website and marketing strategy that will convert leads into paying customers, are usually the goals of a web consultant – which is something that a website designer can’t do.

Website consultants are the experts at helping their clients achieve their business goals online, not only just designing a website.

A web consultant is not afraid to say no. When a client suggests something that the consultant doesn’t see as a good fit for the project, the consultant will be willing to say no, with a full explanation for why the idea is alky.

Whereas, a website designer is more likely to do exactly as requested without asking any questions or providing explanations.

Why we are web consultants?

While design and technology are in our nature, problem-solving is our true passion.

Our clients don’t just want a website. They want a website as an online marketing tool that they can use to build and grow their businesses. And you can’t have that without proper consultation and strategy.

We know that a successful website isn’t about pretty graphics or fancy features: it’s about attracting the right audience, generating leads and, increasing revenue.

That’s why we don’t sell just websites. We sell marketing platforms and our experience on what works for our client’s digital strategy.

Do our designs win us any grand awards? No.

But we know what works and we help our clients implement it.

I hope this article was helpful in explaining how to choose a website designer vs a web consultant (and why you might consider a web consultant over a website designer, too!).
